The $10,000 buy in tournament of the tenth season of the WPT started this Thursday, and the day saw a total of 185 players take part in it. There were a number of notables who were around during the day and some got eliminated while some survived to press on to the next day.

Who’s In, Who’s Out

There were a number of notable players around day 1 of the 2011 WPT Foxwoods including Jason Somerville, John Cernuto, David Paredes, Micah Raskin, Jonathan Aguiar, and Justin Schwartz. Unfortunately for them, they did not make it on to the second day. Of course, there were those who were able to survive the first day including Erik Seidel, Dwyte Pilgrim, Jason Mercier, David Williams, Lee Markholt, and of course, the player who emerged as the chip leader, Thomas Schreiber.

Rare Hands

One of the main highlights of the day was Party Poker‘s Greg Lang’s royal flush. Greg Lang already had the J – Q hearts and later on the A, K and 10 of hearts were revealed. The thing about the hand however, is that Greg Lang’s opponent managed to fold just in time. It really was such a waste of a very rare hand. Of course, yet another exciting match up happened later in the day, and this time, it was Peter Polianto who had the cards. The flop already gave out a 4 and a couple of 3’s and Politano had the other couple of 3’s with him. When it came down to it, one player was still going against Politano as the player already had a full house with him. Unfortunately for him, Politano already had a quad of 3’s with him, and Politano then gained a strong 62k stack from there on. This gave Politano the opportunity to build his stack even further and by the end of the day, he reached third in chip count.

The Chip Count on to Day 2

At the end of the day, it was Thomas Schreiber who took the role of chip leader on to the second day with his strong 104,000 chips. Of course, right on second is James Frangoulidis with a pretty impressive 102,425 as well. On third is Peter Politano with an awesome 98,575 as Andy Frankenberger is sitting on the fourth spot with 90,200. Not far from Frankenberger is Kathy Liebert, with her 90,000 chips for day 2. Next on the list is Andi Rossi, with a pretty good 87,850 chips, and on seventh is Josh Bergman with 84,600. On eight is Eli Berg with a solid 84,425 ad Donald Russel and Brian Striar sits on ninth and tenth place with 82,325 and 82,250 chips respectively.

At the end of the World Series of Poker Europe, it was Swiss player Guillaume Humber who emerged as the champion and at the same time collecting a nice sum of €215,999 and the bracelet for the event.

No Bracelets for Hellmuth

During the earlier parts of the day, you really can’t deny that everybody was watching Phil Hellmuth’s every move as the Poker Brat was yet again close to winning his twelfth bracelet. Even though Hellmuth had a pretty good chip count during the start of the day (came in on second to Humber), unfortunately things didn’t go too well for him. Hellmuth’s calls were unfortunately not well timed. He once called a 123k bet by Adrien Allain, and Hellmuth saw no improvements to his pocket 9’s and lost a fourth of his total chip count. Things just got worse later on as Allain, who plays online at Party Poker, was able to take smaller bits of chips from Hellmuth little by little. Eventually, things had to die down and Hellmuth later on was eliminated by Marton Czuczor, which landed Hellmuth on seventh place at the end.

Humbert on to the Win

Humbert started on as the leader of the table, but things started out for him once he managed to get an A-Q against MAtan Krakow’s J-10. The river did give Krakow another J, but the flop has already given Humbert another A, which sent Krakow down to elimination valley. Humbert eventually reached the heads up match against Azisa Maeda. The heads up was decided later on as Maeda went all in with his 4-3 against Humbert’s 5-8. The flop read 9, 6, and 7 which meant that Humbert already had a straight with him. The turn and river revealed a couple of 4’s which gave Maeda a pretty good three of a kind. Humbert’s straight was still superior, and Humbert then won his very first major live tournament.

The Final Rankings

The player on top is Swiss player Guillaume Humbert with a whopping €215,999. On second place is Azusa Maeda with a pretty good €133,471. Right behind Maeda is Roy Finlay, with a total of €92,629 overall. Matan Krakow is up next on fourth with a pretty good €65,068 as Adrien Allain comes in at fifth with €46,250. On sixth place is Martin Czuczor with a good €33,255 as the Poker Brat Phil Hellmuth is on seventh place with a decent €24,183, the same with Alexander Salabaschew on eighth place. Casey Kastle is on ninth with €17,790, the same with Bruno Benveniste, who is on tenth place.
